1. CONTESTANT PROFILE
Contestant from any part of the Salesian world can participate. They should belong to any one of the institutions of the Salesian Family, be it school, college, technical school, social centers, hostels, youth Centers, oratories, parish etc.
Every contestant has to get his/her work validated from the person incharge or delegated from that institution for this purpose.
2. CONTESTANT AGE LIMITS
As DBGYFF is a youth film festival, only youth
between the age of 14 and 25 may submit their films.
The DBGYFF is a youth film festival, therefore, contestants, as defined in Article 1 above, aged between 14 (with the provision that minors must provide the necessary express authorization from the adult exercising parental responsibility) and 25 (on 1 January 2023) may submit their films. The contestants will be classified into two age groups. Category 1:
Juniors - from the age of 14 to 19 and Category 2:
Seniors – from the age of 20 to 25.

3. LIMITS FOR THE PRODUCTION DATE OF THE FILM
All submitted films must have been created
after January 1, 2022and should not have been screened or exhibited online. Films completed before before January 2022 will not be admitted to the festival.
4. THEME
All films must be based on the theme
“Love builds Peace and Solidarity”. All films that speak about young people as ambassadors of love, constructing peace and solidarity among all peoples are welcome.
5. GENRE
The festival accepts all kinds of films except those showing cruelty to humans and animals, nudity and gory content. Films with discriminatory content or references to political movements are not allowed.
6. LANGUAGE
The short film can be in any language, but should be
subtitled in English.
7. LENGTH AND CATEGORIES
Films must not exceed the indicated length,
5 minutes including end credits. DBGYFF 2023 welcomes all film entries in any preferred genre.
8. SUBMISSION OF SEVERAL FILMS
A contestant may present only one film at the festival. Each work must be submitted individually and accompanied by its own completed online registration form. Multiple entries by the same individual is not permitted. Multiple individuals from the same institute may compete with their own entries.
9. DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION
The last date for registration and submission of the short film for
DBGYFF 2023 is Tuesday, 15th August 2023.
10. NOTIFICATIONS
DBGYFF commits to notifying contestants as follows:
- Immediately after submission, the SUBMITTED notification indicates that the film has been submitted to the festival.
- The ACCEPTED notification indicates that the film has been approved for participation in the festival.
- The NOT ACCEPTED notification indicates that the film has not been admitted as it fails to comply with the rules of the festival.
- The SHORT-LISTED notification after the evaluation by the Regional Jury ensures that the film has been entered among the films of the region for regional screening.
- The NOT SHORT-LISTED notification after the evaluation by the Regional Jury indicate that the film has not been selected or short-listed.
- The SELECTED notification confirms that the film has been officially selected for screening in DBGYFF 2023.
11. FESTIVAL DATE & SCREENING
The screening of selected films will be on
Friday 13 and Saturday 14 October 2023. They can be screened at all institutions of the Salesian Family and other like-minded institutions and organizations that make such request to the Don Bosco nel Mondo Foundation.
12. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION
Before proceeding with the entry, the contestant must ensure that he/she has complied with all the following technical features when making the film:
a. Frame Rate: The film should be encoded and uploaded using the same frame rate that was used during the recording. Common frame rates include: 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 and 60 frames per second.
b. Film settings: Expected aspect ratio is 16:9, with Full HD 1920 x 1080 pixel size, in mp4 format. The Video Codec should be H.264, and the maximum bitrate should be 8000 kbps, and the maximum size cannot be more than 1 GB.
c. Subtitles: All films must have English subtitles, including ones that are in English and should be integrated into the video. Subtitles as external/add-on files like .srt/.vtt/.ass/.ttml and similar
ones are not accepted.
13. FILM ASSETS
The contestant must ensure that the film has all 3 main requirements below, otherwise its submission will not be considered valid:
a. Synopsis: a brief summary of the film in English for the jury.
b. Film thumbnail: 1 horizontal JPEG image of less than 500 KB, size 1920x1080 pixels, optimized for the web.
c. Contestant’s photo: to be used exclusively for the purposes of the Festival, each contestant may voluntarily provide 1 vertical JPEG image of no more than 100 KB, with a size of 900x1200 pixels,

14. ORIGINALITY AND AUTHORIZATION
By registering, the contestant ensures that he/she has obtained all rights and licenses and assumes full responsibility for the film submitted.
15. JURYING PROCESS
All the entries are classified as per the seven geographical regions. These entries are further classified as per the two age-group categories of the participants – Juniors (from age 14-19) and Seniors (from age 20-25) for jurying and shortlisting.
16. SELECTED FILMS
The Selected short films will be announced by 24 September 2023. Only selected films will be screened at the festival. Each region will have its own specific list of selected short films for the screening.
17. AWARDS & RECOGNITION
The list of awards for the DBGYFF, include Global Bests, Regional Bests and Local Bests.
- The 10 Global Bests are awarded to the best overall among all the seven regions, based equally on the two categories of the participants (5 Juniors + 5 seniors) and they will be awarded a €2,000.00 (two thousand Euros) respectively.
- The 70 Regional Bests are the awards given for the best 10 entries of the seven regions. Each award will contain a cash prize of Euro 1,000.00 (one thousand Euros) respectively.
- The 100 Local Bests are the prizes awarded to encourage the participation from every province. For every 100 entries that come for the festival from a province, five films are shortlisted by the Province Local Team and 100 Euros each will be given as a cash award to those five entries.
18. WINNERS
The winners of DBGYFF 2023 will be announced on
14 October 2023. The decision of the REGIONAL JURY and GLOBAL JURY members is final and not subject to complaint and/or appeal.
19. SCREENING
The screening of all officially selected DBGYFF 2023 short films will take place in attendance in all the registered DBGYFF venues all over the worldREV. All screening venues should meet all the local government safety standards and guidelines.
